WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF A MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT

It is critical to know what to do if an accident happens. Timely and prudent action can save lives. Here are some guidelines:
  • Stop your vehicle, if it is safe and legal.
  • Never leave the scene even if you are frightened or don't have insurance.
  • Get out of the line of traffic.
  • Try to warn on-coming traffic with flares or cones.
  • If qualified, render aid to the injured.
  • Call 911 and the police.
  • Identify all parties in the accident.
  • Exchange information including name, address, phone number, model and make of vehicle.
  • Driver's license numbers, vehicle registration, and insurance information.
  • Identify witnesses and get their names, addresses, and phone numbers.
  • Don't comment on the accident but do cooperate with the police.
  • Don't admit fault.
  • See your doctor - Sometimes injuries aren't immediately apparent.
  • Report the accident to the DMV.
  • Notify your Insurance Company.
  • Don't offer to pay anything.
  • If possible, take pictures of the scene.
